John 14:16-17 reads,
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” – John 14:16-17, ESV
The Holy Spirit is a real thing.
When Jesus ascended into heaven, he sent down the Holy Spirit. The Helper, as the bible references him. He is also known as the Counselor and the Spirit of truth. The Holy Spirit was a gift from Jesus to you and I, to help us navigate through this thing called life.
In the book of John, we see that Jesus is quoted saying, “the world cannot receive” the Spirit of truth. This is often times why nonbelievers who read the bible find it to be confusing, or not factual. They lack the evidence and the knowledge of who Christ is because they do not posses the Holy Spirit within them. Jesus says the Holy Spirit will “dwell with [us] and will be in [us].” This means that the Holy Spirit is a spirit that lives on the inside of us when we come to the knowledge and acceptance of Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit is a person that lives within us, to help us navigate and move through life. When we are stuck, or don’t know which route to take or which decision to make concerning an important issue, God communicates to us through his spirit. This communication is evidence that God lives within us, through his Holy Spirit.
The bible talks of this exchange many times in scripture:
“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that i go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you.” – John 16:7, ESV
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” – John 16:13, ESV
In these few scriptures alone, we can see that the Helper, as Jesus calls him, is a guarantee. We were guaranteed a Helper in this thing called life. An actual spirit to be with us and to be on the inside of us to help us live life, and to lead us into all things.
The Spirit of God is not just mentioned in the new testament when Jesus arrived. You can trace knowledge of the Holy Spirit, and of Jesus, all the way back to the book of Genesis.
In Genesis 1:26 it reads,
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness’.” – Genesis 1:26, ESV
The Holy Trinity is first introduced to us in the very beginning of the bible.
God knew man before he came into existence. He sent his one and only son, Jesus, for the redemption of mankind, and secured help along the way with his Holy Spirit.
Since the beginning of time, God knew how he wanted us to be fashioned. Who we are as people directly symbolizes who God is. When God said, “Let us make man in our image,” he was referencing to the fact that God himself was 3 persons in one, so he made us in similar fashion. We have a body, a soul, and a spirit. We as humans directly embody and personify God and his likeness.
We were not made from other mammals; we were instead made in the identity and in the uniqueness of who God is. God made us in his perfect image, and as a result of our betrayal towards him in the Garden of Eden, he sent his son down to die for us, and his Spirit down to help lead us and guide us.
If you feel you have not truly accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior, I want you to know that Help is on the way. God has granted you the faith and confidence to know him, and to know of and experience his Holy Spirit dwelling on the inside of you.
If you are a Christian and you feel you have lost connection with God’s Holy Spirit, I would encourage you to fast and pray for a renewal. Renew your mind, clear your space of clutter, and get back into your word. As a believer, I would encourage you to pray to God before reading your bible. This way, you can ensure that the Holy Spirit is ministering to you through God’s words. All scripture is “God-breathed.”
Take control back over your life, and know that the God you serve is here with you – in Spirit and in truth.
God bless you.
